Scleroderma is a relatively common and often debilitating condition. In light of that, one might reasonably assume that scientists and medical professionals would be able to devise a successful method for the treatment of the disorder.

Malignant lymphoma (ML) is frequently associated with several forms of collagen diseases such as Sjören syndrome, systemic lupus erythematodes, and rheumatoid arthritis. However, the occurrence of ML in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients has rarely been reported. Here we report an SSc patient who developed mediastinal (thymic) large B-cell lymphoma (MLBCL).

RATIONALE: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is considered a contributing factor in the pathogenesis of ILD. OBJECTIVES: To characterize GER (acid and nonacid) in patients with SSc with and without ILD.

Silica binding and toxicity in alveolar macrophages

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

An interesting post from:

http://antioxidant-scleroderma.blogspot.com/2009/12/silica-binding-and-toxicity-in-alveolar.html

By Raymond F and Colleague Inhalation of the crystalline form of silica is associated with a variety of pathologies from acute lung inflammation to silicosis, in addition to autoimmune disorders and cancer. Basic science researchers looking at the mechanisms involved with the earliest initiators of disease are focused on how the alveolar macrophage (AM) interacts with the inhaled silica particle and the consequences of silica-induced toxicity on the cellular level. Based on experimental results, several rationales have been developed on exactly how crystalline silica particles are toxic to the macrophage cell that is functionally responsible for clearance of the foreign particle

By D.Romero-Alvira, E.Roche, L.Placer Cardiomyopathies are the group of diseases affecting the cardiac muscle. Although they have never been related to oxidative stress diseases, an analysis of the causes of these pathologies reveals the presence of a pro-oxidative agent or that the intracardiocytic balance between oxidation and antioxidation has been broken
